The Aesthesis of Unworlding: Against Aesthetic Inferentialism
June 26, 2021
This lecture will consider the limits of a post/inhumanist
aesthetics which views aesthetic cognition as a dynamic set of rule governed
symbolic and world-building practices (on analogy with inferentialism in semantics).
I will argue that such accounts overstate the constitutive power of rules while
failing to offer an ontology that can explain the dynamics of symbolic change
that it presupposes. In response, I want to show that an adequate aesthetics
must include an ontology of the encounter which grounds and disturbs (or
ungrounds) the coherence of aesthetic practice
.
