Why have matter and movement posed such enormous difficulties for philosophers and scientists in the Western tradition? Is the movement of nature continuous or discrete and why have the greatest minds of Western civilization dedicated their lives to discovering something truly immobile? Aristotle’s idea of an “unmoved mover,” Archimedes’ fixed “point,” Descartes’ “unmoveable” certainty, Newton’s divine clockmaker, and even Einstein’s idea of a block universe are all part of this grand effort—but what motivated this important pursuit and what are the consequences of it for materialism today? This talk provides an introduction to the philosophy of movement and process materialist philosophy.
